Antimicrobial susceptibility and pathogenicity of Escherichia coli strains of environmental origin Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Daiane; Finkler,Fabrine; Grassotti,Tiela Trapp; Kunert Filho,Hiran Castagnino; Lima,Francisco Esmaile de Sales; Soares,Beatriz Dugaich; Rossato,Juliana Marzari; Cunha,Augusto César da; Brito,Kelly Cristina Tagliari de; Brito,Benito Guimarães de.
The study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility of 109 samples of Escherichia coli (E. coli) of environmental origin and to characterize these isolates according to the degree of pathogenicity in vivo, verifying a possible relationship between this variable and susceptibility to the active principles tested. The isolates were subjected to disc diffusion test to 14 antibiotics. From 16.5% to 90% of the samples were sensitive; 1 - 28.5% showed intermediate degree of susceptibility and between 9 to 78% of E. coli analyzed were resistant. The highest resistance percentages were seen in the class of quinolones and tetracyclines (>75%), and for sensitivity in the class of amphenicols (68.8%). By inoculating 1- day - old chicks, the isolates...

Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Oliveira Junior,Carlos Augusto; Diniz,Amanda Nádia; Alves,Guilherme Guerra; Guedes,Roberto Maurício Carvalho; Vilela,Eduardo Garcia; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
The objective of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial susceptibility in Clostridium difficile strains isolated from animals and humans in Brazil. The 54 C. difficile strains used were isolated from stool samples from piglets (n=16), dogs (n=13), humans (n=13), foals (n=8) calves (n=2), an ocelot (n=1) and a maned wolf (n=1). Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using the serial plate agar dilution method for penicillin, florfenicol, oxytetracycline, erythromycin, vancomycin, metronidazole and tylosin. The C. difficile strains assessed were susceptible to metronidazole and vancomycin. Florfenicol resistance was rarely observed; 52 (96.4%) strains were sensitive to this antimicrobial. Five (9.3%), five (9.3%), 14 (25.9%) and 20 (37.0%) strains...

Anti-tuberculosis drug resistance in strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from patients in a tertiary hospital in Bahia BJID
Matos,Eliana Dias; Lemos,Antônio Carlos Moreira; Bittencourt,Carolina; Mesquita,Cristiane Leite.
Anti-tuberculosis drug resistance, particularly multiresistance, is a crucial issue in the control of tuberculosis (TB). This study estimated the prevalence of primary and acquired anti-tuberculosis drug resistance in strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from hospitalized patients, to identify the risk factors for resistance, and to evaluate the its impact on hospital mortality for tuberculosis. Strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from 217 patients hospitalized for TB were analyzed. Subjects were recruited sequentially at a TB reference hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil from July 2001 to July 2003. Multiresistant (MR) strains were defined as strains resistant to rifampicin and isoniazid. Of a total of 217 strains isolated, 41 (19.0%, 95%CI:...

Apoptosis as pathogenic mechanism of infection with vesicular stomatitis virus: Evidence in primary bovine fibroblast cultures Biocell
López-Herrera,A.; Ruiz-Sáenz,J.; Góez,Y.P.; Zapata,W.; Velilla,P.A.; Arango,A.E.; Urcuqui-Inchima,S..
To determine whether fibroblasts from Blanco Orejinegro cattle, exhibit any level of resistance to infection against vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) serotypes Indiana (VSV-I) or New Jersey (VSVNJ), 30 fibroblast cultures were phenotyped to evaluate their resistance/susceptibility. Thirty three % of Blanco Orejinegro fibroblast cultures were classified as very resistant, 50% as resistant, and 17% as susceptible to VSV-I infection, whereas 20% were classified as very resistant, 50% as resistant and 30% as susceptible to VSV-NJ infection. Therefore, there appears to be a large variation in phenotypic polymorphism among the fibroblasts to infection by VSV. To elucidate the mechanisms responsible for this diversity, we searched for a possible relationship...

Beet curly top resistance in USDA-ARS Ft. Collins Germplasm, 2011 NWISRL
Panella, Leonard W.; Strausbaugh, C.A..
Twenty-two sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) lines from the USDA-ARS Ft. Collins sugar beet program were screened for resistance to Beet severe curly top virus (BSCTV) and other closely related Curtovirus species in 2011. Commercial cultivars Monohikari and HM PM90 were included as susceptible and resistant checks, respectively. The curly top evaluation was conducted at the USDA-ARS North Farm in Kimberly, ID which has Portneuf silt loam soil and had been in barley in 2010. The field was plowed both in the fall and the spring, fertilized (80 lb N and 120 lb P2O5/A) on 20 Apr 11, sprayed with Ethotron (2 pt/A), and roller harrowed. The germplasm was planted (density of 142,560 seeds/A) on 16 May. The plots consisted of two rows 10 ft long with 22-in row...

Beet curly top resistance in USDA-ARS Kimberly germplasm lines, 2015 NWISRL
Strausbaugh, C.A.; Eujayl, I.A..
Curly top caused by Beet curly top virus is a widespread disease problem vectored by the beet leafhopper in semiarid sugar beet production areas. Host resistance is the primary defense against this problem, but resistance in commercial cultivars is only low to intermediate. In order to identify novel sources of curly top resistance, 14 sugar beet lines were screened in a disease nursery in 2015. The lines were arranged in a randomized complete block design with six replications. A curly top epiphytotic was created by releasing six viruliferous beet leafhoppers per plant at the four-to six-leaf growth stage on 24 Jun. Foliar symptoms were evaluated on 13 and 20 Jul using a scale of 0-9 (0 = healthy and 9 = dead) in a continuous manner. Curly top...

Biological parameters of larvae, nymphs, and engorged females of Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius, 1787) (Acari: Ixodidae) obtained from artificial and successive infestations on Oryctolagus cuniculus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Lagomorpha: Ochotonidae) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Freitas,C.M.V.; Leite,R.C.; Oliveira,P.R.; Fernández,F.C..
The development of acquired resistance to Amblyomma cajennense ticks was evaluated. A total of 18 rabbits were uniformly distributed into three groups named GL, GN, and GA that were submitted to three consecutive infestations with, respectively, larvae, nymphs, and adults of A. cajennense. After the infestations, the parasitic and reproductive parameters of recovered instars were evaluated. A significant reduction of recovery rates of inoculated ticks was observed only after the third infestation of animals in groups GL and GN (P<0.01). The modal day for drop-off of engorged larvae and nymphs increased along the infestations. The recovered engorged nymphs presented a significant reduction of the mean body weight between the first and the third...

Bonamia ostreae, parasite de l'huître plate, Ostrea edulis: sa position taxonomique parmi les parasites du groupe "microcell", analyses des interactions hôte/parasite chez plusieurs populations d'huîtres plates ArchiMer
Besnard-cochennec, Nathalie.
Bonamia ostreae is the causative agent of hemocyte disease. It has been detected first during mortalities occured in Franc in 1979. Bonamiosis spread rapidly among oysters farming in France and Europ. Another species, Bonamia sp. has been detected in New Zealand and Australia. These paasites were both included in the "microcell" group. This group contains 2 others parasites, Mikrocytos mackini affecting Crassostrea gigas in British Columbia (Canada) and M. roughleyi affecing Saccostrea glomerata in Australia. Structural and molecular caracterisation of all these parasites were realised. Results show tha B. ostreae, B. sp., B. exitiosus. Molecular tools are available for genus detection, Bonamia spp. and Mikrocytos and species identification (B. ostreae, B....

BRS Juruti: the first Brazilian habanero-type hot pepper cultivar Horticultura Brasileira
Ribeiro,Claudia SC; Souza,Karina RR; Carvalho,Sabrina IC; Reifschneider,Francisco JB.
ABSTRACT: The Habanero hot pepper group is not well known in Brazil, despite its origin in the Amazon. Nevertheless, domestic and international markets have been increasing the demand for this type of hot pepper. The Brazilian agroindustry is interested in supplying part of this demand with high quality products and competitive prices, and it needs well-adapted cultivars. To fill this gap, Embrapa Vegetables developed the Habanero pepper cultivar BRS Juruti, which meets the demands of both the market for fresh fruit and the processing agroindustry of mash and sauces. Cultivar BRS Juruti has red fruits and yielded around 50 t/ha (36,000 plants/ha). Fruit pungency is circa 260,000 SHU and fruits have high content of vitamin C (122 mg/100 g). BRS Juruti is...
